The Home Area Network (HAN) consists of the software and hardware needed to create a network among multiple home computers using a variety of network media.

The software allows the network hardware in each computer to "talk" to each other. The software usually includes a flavor of Microsoft Windows. There is some configuration needed in order for these computers to talk to each other on the network.

The hardware is where the different network media technologies converge. There are a variety of technologies available that allow these computers to "talk" to each other. These include wireless, phone line, power line, and Ethernet.
